Thank you for choosing IJHE for your paper. The information below will ensure we have everything required so your submission can move through the peer review and publication process smoothly. Please review the information closely, as doing so will ensure your submission matches all requirements.

Note: While partner affiliation is encouraged, authors are not required to be associated with a partner agency to publish in IJHE. You may email any questions to journal@hecoalition.org.

Submission Types
IJHE invites submissions of unpublished articles on empirical and theoretical research, including critical essays, conceptual or policy analyses, literature reviews, and program evaluations on humane-related education and interventions. In addition to research articles, IJHE accepts philosophical works, book reviews, editorials, and other types of manuscripts. IJHE editors select quality submissions from manuscripts that address a wide variety of interest areas within the broad field of humane education. Articles may be interdisciplinary or draw on any appropriate discipline and address any level from early childhood to higher education and other adult education fora. Articles may address any educational sector from formal to informal to non-formal. To be considered for publication, submissions must advance the contemporary philosophy and/or practice of humane education.

Permissions
It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission for quotations from unpublished or copyrighted material in excess of 250 words, and for the reprinting of figures or tables from unpublished or copyrighted material. Additionally, necessary permissions from any institutional review boards for use of human participants in research must have been secured prior to data collection.

Copyright

IJHE is an open-access journal. As such, anyone is able to download, copy, and share open-access articles. As an organization founded upon the value of accessibility, the Humane Education Coalition provides authors with the Creative Commons license Attribution CC BY-NC, which allows others to remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge you and be non-commercial, they don't have to license their derivative works on the same terms.

Timeline and Review
IJHE is an annual publication. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. After a manuscript has been selected, the editors identify reviewers to consider the merits of the manuscript. Editors may suggest revisions, in which case the manuscript will be returned with a copy of the editors' suggestions. Revised manuscripts will be subject to an additional review. The entire review process may take up to 6 months. Once a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the authors must sign an author agreement before entering the copy editing phase. Please review and follow all conditions and presentation requirements. Submit your manuscript and any accompanying documents in Word format to journal@hecoalition.org.

Conditions
In order for the Editorial Board
to consider your manuscript, it must meet the following ethics and copyright conditions:

  1. The manuscript must be your original work. It does not duplicate any other previously published work, including your own.
  2. The manuscript must be submitted only to the International Journal of Humane Education. It is not under consideration, under peer review, accepted for publication, or published elsewhere.
  3. The manuscript does not contain anything illegal, fraudulent, libelous, abusive, or defamatory.

Please note that IJHE will conduct originality checks for your submission during the peer review and/or production process. Any manuscript that does not meet these conditions will not be considered.

Presentation
Papers must be submitted in English and should strictly follow the latest edition of the American Psychological Association (APA) Style Manual.
Manuscripts should be clearly written and well-organized.

Word limits are as follows:
  • Research articles: no less than 5,000 words but no more than 8,000 words; this limit does not include references, tables, figure captions, or footnotes.
  • Critical essays: 3,000-5,000 words
  • Reviews: 500-2,500 words

For research submissions, a title page, abstract, manuscript, and references are required. Additionally, you may include authors' notes, key words, and/or appendices where appropriate. On the title page, include the title, names and affiliations of each author, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of each author. Multi-part figures should be additionally labeled with lowercase letters. Citations must be presented in a list of references and formatted to APA style guidelines. Explanatory notes must be identified with consecutive superscripts and listed in a section titled NOTES at the end of the text.

Articles may be edited for clarity and readability, and changes may be made so that the text conforms to IJHE's style.

Please also include a high-resolution image that reflects the content of your submission, and that may be used in conjunction with your submission if published.
