POLICY

We believe humane education and schooling go hand-in-hand.

We support partners in their efforts to introduce and enforce policies that incorporate humane education in school standards. A priority objective is to identify and provide accountability measures for educators in states that have adopted policies and guidelines to support humane education.

We support the inclusion of humane education in schools with the following projects:
  1. Developing an assessment of the state of humane education in schools in states where humane education policy exists.
  2. Creating case studies that identify and summarize the successful implementation of humane education in several K-12 settings.
  3. Partnering with universities to develop humane education courses for teacher preparation programs.
  4. Working with policymakers to draft a comprehensive humane education policy template that may be applicable in many states.
  5. Policy enforcement and accountability measures for existing humane education policies.
Our policy initiative partners include:
Many educators in states where humane education policies exist are not even aware of the requirements, our research suggests. As a result, compliance with these mandates may be inconsistent.

The Coalition's accountability measures include:
  • Sharing state policies and providing resources that integrate humane education into school standards.
  • Providing tools for educators to assess humane education lessons and outcomes.
  • Encouraging annual audits of compliance for existing requirements in school districts, including reporting how the schools are fulfilling the mandates.

Policies once existed in Alabama, Louisiana, and North Dakota but have since been repealed. A possible policy may also exist in Wyoming.
