Author Ondine Sherman is a life-long animal advocate who is passionate about promoting respect and compassion for all creatures. In 2004, she and her father, Brian Sherman, founded Voiceless; the organization is now one of Australia's leading animal protection groups. Additionally, Ondine's social media platform, Franimals, has become a popular community for animal-loving teens across the globe.
Ondine recently shared with us a copy of her young adult novel, Sky. This wonderful book will take the reader on a captivating journey to rural Australia. The teenage main character, Sky, is trying to find her way (and herself) amidst a series of challenges. Her mother has recently passed away, leaving Sky with her aunt and uncle far away from home in a small Australian town. If that isn’t enough, Sky also faces trying to fit in at a new school, the uncovering of long-hidden family secrets, and contending with feelings of both love and loss.
What makes Sky’s story exceptional to us is her passion for animals and her strength in uncovering a case of animal cruelty. As she navigates new friendships and considers taking risks to make a difference, Sky learns to accept herself for who she truly is and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.
With Sky, I wanted to write an entertaining, relatable book for young adults and create a safe space where they can learn about animal protection issues.
Sky is an eye-opening story designed with teenagers in mind, something we don’t have enough of in the field of humane education. Certainly, we can all relate to Sky in one way or another, but her thought-provoking story aligns beautifully with the needs and passions of young adults. It invites them to find courage and caring in themselves for others. Sky’s perseverance and bravery make her a shining example for young people in today’s world.
The most valuable takeaway for us at the Coalition is that kindness and compassion toward others – both human and non-human - can change lives. As a bonus, you’re bound to fall in love with chickens after reading this book. We sure did!
Sky can also be used as an educational text to support a range of classroom learning objectives. Teachers can access a variety of engaging classroom activities related to Sky in the Teaching Notes produced by The Author People.
Sky is available for purchase on Amazon and several other distributors. Proceeds from the sale of the book benefit Voiceless.
